When your dog needs regular skin care, it can be so hard to tell whether a product is really helping or whether the improvement is only temporary.
We tried Hexachlor-K Shampoo as part of Simba’s regular skin-care routine. In our experience, it did seem to help — but it wasn’t the kind of product that fixed everything after one bath.
What’s in the bottle
HexaChlor-K is made by GlenHaven Therapeutics, and the label describes it as a medically formulated antimicrobial and antifungal shampoo for dogs and cats. It used to be sold as F3/S.
According to the product label, the active ingredients are 2% chlorhexidine gluconate and 1% ketoconazole, and the formula also contains acetic acid. Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic that works against many kinds of bacteria, and ketoconazole is an antifungal. That’s why shampoos like this are often suggested for skin problems that involve bacteria or yeast.
💡 Good to know: the label says to work the shampoo into a rich lather on a wet coat and leave it on the skin for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing well. That contact time really matters, so a quick lather and rinse may not be enough. The label also suggests using it 2 to 4 times a week for the first 4 weeks, then once a week, or as your vet directs.
The line also comes as a leave-on spray (formerly F3/C) with the same active ingredients, meant to stay on the skin instead of being rinsed off.
Did it help?
For Simba, yes, we noticed some improvement. His skin seemed more manageable for a while, and it honestly felt like the shampoo was doing something, rather than making no difference at all.
That said, the effect didn’t last very long. After some time, we needed to use it again as part of his routine. So I’d describe the results as helpful but temporary, at least for Simba.
It worked better as regular maintenance
One thing I learned is that it seemed to work best as part of an ongoing routine, not as a one-time treatment. For Simba, using it once and forgetting about it just wasn’t enough. We had to keep using it every so often to hold on to the improvement we were seeing.
If you’re hoping for a shampoo that solves things permanently or instantly, that’s worth knowing. For us, it was more about managing his skin and keeping it comfortable.
What I liked
What I appreciated most was that we could actually see a difference. With dog skin products, it’s often hard to tell whether anything changed at all. With Simba, Hexachlor-K felt useful enough that we kept using it.
At the same time, I wouldn’t call it a miracle product. It helped, but regular care was still needed.
What I didn’t love
The biggest downside for us was that the results didn’t last. I would have loved something that kept Simba comfortable for longer between baths.
Having to repeat the routine regularly can also be a hassle, especially if your dog isn’t a fan of baths. Still, because we did see a benefit, it felt worth keeping in his routine.
Would I use it again?
Yes, I’d use it again for Simba — just with realistic expectations. For us, Hexachlor-K worked better as a maintenance product than a permanent fix. It helped for a while, and then we needed to use it again.
Every dog’s skin is different, so your dog may respond differently. And if your dog has ongoing itching, redness, infections, hair loss, or other skin problems, please talk with your vet about what’s causing it and how often a medicated shampoo should be used.
Final thoughts
Overall, my experience with Hexachlor-K Shampoo was positive, but not perfect. It gave Simba some noticeable relief, which is why we kept using it. But the improvement wasn’t permanent, and regular use was part of the deal.
My biggest takeaway? This isn’t a “use it once and the problem’s gone” kind of product. It was simply one helpful piece of Simba’s ongoing skin care — one small way of keeping him a little more comfortable.
