A Boston man is facing seven animal cruelty charges after police found one dead dog and six surviving dogs in poor condition inside a South Boston apartment.
The case began on September 7, when 39-year-old Lester James called 911 to report that one of his dogs had died inside a cage at an apartment on Old Colony Avenue. According to prosecutors, officers who arrived at the home found multiple dogs that appeared severely underweight and living in unsanitary conditions.
What Police Found Inside the Apartment
According to prosecutors, officers found a dead pit bull named Gwap inside a cage that contained vomit and feces. Police also said they did not see food or water bowls inside the cage.
A broken broomstick was found inside as well. James reportedly told investigators that he did not know how it got there and suggested someone may have entered the apartment. Authorities said they found no signs of forced entry.
Elsewhere in the apartment, officers found a white pit bull chained to a kitchen wall. Prosecutors described the dog as severely emaciated.
Three young pit bulls were found in another cage and also appeared underweight. One of the puppies was reportedly limping and unable to put weight on its left paw.
Another pit bull and a Chihuahua were also found inside the apartment and appeared malnourished, according to prosecutors.
Six Dogs Were Removed and Taken for Veterinary Care
Boston Animal Care and Control removed the six surviving dogs from the apartment, along with the deceased dog.
The living dogs were taken for veterinary evaluation and treatment, including care at MSPCA-Angell Animal Medical Center.
Officials said the dogs remained underweight and that several had scratches, bites, or other injuries. The encouraging news is that their overall condition has been improving while they receive treatment.
